The Bristol County Savings Charitable Foundation recently awarded a $25,000 grant for community outreach purposes to the UMass Dartmouth Foundation, which has chosen to use the grant to help support the University's 2008 Freedom Festival.
Members of Bristol County Savings senior management team were on hand to present the check to UMass officials at a breakfast held earlier this month at the University. UMass Chancellor Jean F. MacCormack hailed the contribution in her remarks, noting, "This grant marks the beginning of a vibrant new relationship with Bristol County Savings Bank, which will aid us in our outreach to our region."
The Freedom Festival draws more than 20,000 residents from southeastern Massachusetts and northern Rhode Island to the campus to enjoy this annual |

Fourth of July celebration.
The purpose of the Bristol County Savings Charitable Foundation, established in 1996 in celebration of the Bank's 150th anniversary, is to "give back" to the communities served by Bristol County Savings Bank, and contribute to the welfare of the people and institutions within those communities. Early in 2007, Bristol County Savings opened a full-service branch office located on Route 6 in Dartmouth, MA and has been steadily increasing its presence in the local community.
The 2008 Freedom Festival will begin at 6 p.m. on the UMass Dartmouth campus and will feature a New Bedford Symphony Orchestra pops concert followed by fireworks. The fun begins at 6:15 p.m. with a concert by the Pop/Latin band Santa Mamba, followed by the pops concert at 7:45 p.m. and the fireworks starting at 9:15 p.m.
In the event of rain, the orchestra will perform in the 800-seat main auditorium at the Campus Center but the fireworks will be cancelled.
A large turnout is expected. The campus will be open all day and guests are invited to arrive any time after 3 p.m. to find the best available seating. Visitors are encouraged to bring along picnic suppers, lawn chairs, bug spray and blankets to make themselves comfortable. Concession stands and vendors will also be selling a variety of foods and novelty products.
Traffic, public safety and parking plans are in place through the concerted efforts of university, local and state police. Vehicular access to campus will be closed when all on-campus parking spaces are filled and no later than 9 p.m. Parking will be banned along Old Westport Road throughout the evening.
