MUSTARD???S RETREAT AT OCC COFFEEHOUSE, WRENTHAM, MARCH 23
??
Mustard???s Retreat will be performing on Friday, March 23, 7:30 p.m. at the Original Congregational Church in the center of Wrentham. For the past four decades, Mustard’s Retreat (David Tamulevich & Michael Hough) has been entertaining audiences with its special brand of folk music. Highly acclaimed as not only songwriters, but as interpreters of traditional and contemporary songs and stories, their show is full of enthusiasm, good humor and fine musicianship. While both Tamulevich and Hough are grounded in the early traditional 60s folk music boom, they also were influenced by the songwriters of that time, and their shows represent an eclectic blend of music, old and new, with a big dash of storytelling.
David and Michael met in Ann Arbor, MI in 1974. Discovering they shared a common interest in song writing and guitar playing, they put three songs together and took them to the open mike at the famous Ark Coffeehouse and were immediately asked back. Within 18 months they had quit their jobs and were doing music full time. “Music to cure what ails you” is a line from a Michigan Times reviewer that has followed them throughout their career.
Multi-instrumentalists (guitar, electric bass, dulcimer, mandolin, harmonica, penny whistle), their large repertoire draws on the dual influences they both experienced when growing up: the folk revival of the ’60s as well as the explosive singer-songwriter movement. Traditional to pop and all points in between, their show moves effortlessly along with equal doses of humor, history, insight and emotion.
“I work with them several times a year and always wish it was more.” said Canadian songwriter Garnet Rogers, who also produced their landmark recording The Wind and the Crickets. ???The thing that always impresses me is the incredible openness they have with the audience. They stand up there and just radiate friendliness; the audience is included in the whole process, encouraged to sing along and talk back. I’ve learned a lot from them in that sense.”
Tickets for the concert are $15 in advance and $20 at the door, available at the church office, 508-384-3110, or at www.musicatocc.org
The event will be in the Fellowship Hall in the rear of the church.
Parking is available behind the church and in the lot across the street.??
