Young Pawtucket Readers Love Roller Girl

Pawtucket Library

(13 Summer Street)??

On Saturday, May 7th, the Pawtucket Public Library’s Book Club for Kids group met to discuss the Kids Reading Across RI selection for 2016. Kids Reading Across Rhode Island, the ???one book, one state??? initiative for students in grades 3-6, kicked off its 7th year with the 2016 Newbery Honor winning book, Roller Girl by Rhode Island School of Design graduate Victoria Jamieson.

Roller Girl is a fast-paced, honest, and funny graphic novel about friendship and surviving junior high through the power of roller derby.??

Following the Book Club for Kids meeting at the library, many families extended the day’s excitement by traveling to the RI State House in the afternoon for the KRARI Kick-Off Event for Roller Girl.

Kids were able to listen to the author speak about the book, meet the author, and get their free copies of the book signed.

Throughout the first and second floors of the State House, various RI public libraries and community organizations created activity tables related to the themes of the book for families to enjoy.

Kids Reading Across Rhode Island is a partnership of the Rhode Island Center for the Book at the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities and the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services.

Through Kids Reading Across Rhode Island, RI schools and public libraries join forces to bring the joys of reading from the classroom to summer vacation.??

  1. As the Children’s Librarian who was apart of this book club and kick-off event, it was so wonderful to see kids and families excited about a book! I love this annual program.
