Two-day book sale to offer hundreds of rare and out-of-print maritime texts

The back-to-school sales may be over, but it???s not too late to find some great reads and support a unique maritime resource right here in Rhode Island.

The Steamship Historical Society of America (SSHSA), a Warwick-based nonprofit dedicated to the history of engine-powered ships, is holding a massive book sale to clear out some of its duplicate volumes and benefit its one-of-a-kind archive, gallery and library.

When: Friday, October 13, noon to 3 p.m.

Saturday, October 14, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Where: Ship History Center, 2500 Post Road, Warwick

More than 800 surplus nautical books will be on sale, with all of the proceeds supporting SSHSA???s efforts to share America???s maritime heritage with Rhode Island and the rest of the world. No book will be priced higher than $15, and the first 25 people will have the opportunity to fill a bag of books for just $10.

SSHSA opened its Ship History Center to the public in 2015, giving visitors a chance to experience an archive that comprises hundreds of thousands of images, artifacts, periodicals, artwork, official records and memorabilia that help tell the extensive history of engine-powered vessels, their passengers and their crews.

Tours and research are conducted by appointment; visit www.sshsa.org or call 401-463-3570 for more information.
