LTE: “THIS PLACE MATTERS”

Dear Friends and Supporters of the Gen. Nathanael Greene Homestead,

This place matters!!

F GREENE

Award winning journalist and Nathanael Greene Biographer, Gerald “Ged” Carbone once said of the Greene Homestead :

“This place matters! The Homestead is the location of the family trip-hammer forge. Where Nathanael learned all of the skills and knowledge needed to be a successful businessman, all of the skills he utilized to make him the great general and Patriot hero that he became. This place matters! and it needs to be protected!”

I am writing to share with you news concerning Spell Hall, Gen. Greene’s 1770 National Historic Landmark home.

A recent survey of the exterior of the house has revealed an urgent need of repairs; extensive rot to lower trim boards, many lose clapboards requiring re-nailing, and ??severely deteriorated paint particularly on the South and West-facing sides. The current estimates for the repairs range from $20,000-$30,000. This is the bad news.

The good news is, Homestead Trustee Dr. Daniel Harrop has agreed to make a matching challenge grant of .50 cents on the dollar for every dollar raised up to $20,000 towards this project. If we are able to raise $20,000, Dr. Harrop will write the Homestead Association a check for an additional $10,000. So far, we have been able to raise almost $10,000 between an ongoing Facebook fundraising campaign, various special events and a ??few private donations.

I am writing ??to ask for your support with this effort as you understand the importance of preserving and protecting the Homestead. We ask that you give what you can so that we may take advantage of this fantastic grant opportunity from Dr. Harrop, because, this place truly does matter.
