ONLINE GALLERIES
The Cultural Center of Cape Cod offers opportunities to artists through international calls for submissions and juried exhibits throughout the year. In keeping with our mission, our online competitions support artists while complementing and extending our galleries on Cape Cod. Since the Center’s inception, we have featured the work of hundreds of artists from across the country and around the world. We therefore invite you to browse through our virtual galleries, exploring our curated themes like distant lands, the elements, new personalities, varied points of view, and much more. Thank you to the artists who have participated. We are thrilled to be able to connect you with their work.
WINTER MAGIC
With this exhibition we wanted to cast a new creative eye over winter – to push the artists into taking a fresh look at this season and show us a different winter to the one we think we know. Reassess the light and the colors, reconsider the emotions it provokes in us, and interrogate what winter means. The artists we have chosen are those that took a bold and deliberate step to challenge our notion of winter, met head-on the norms and tropes of the season and dug down to find fresh nuance and renewed elegance.
It is exciting that the exhibition has turned out very different than we expected. The selected artists found the nuance and the optimism we were hoping for but delivered those hopes in ways we really didn’t expect. One of the great joys of art is how it surprises us, and this exhibition has arrived full of surprises. Its narrative is filled with unexpected emotions, dark and light; it’s images packed with humor and invention, and it’s delivered to us in an array of amazing styles that arc between passionately abstract and doggedly figurative. Whatever the artwork, and whoever the artist, the collective that is WINTER MAGIC has found the magic in winter.
GREEN / LIGHT
Our themes are designed to challenge the artist. Sometimes the titles are complex or obscure, other times they are simple or straightforward. GREEN / LIGHT sits in this latter camp – the words are familiar and superficially at least, it’s easy to understand what is being asked for. But dig a little and it becomes apparent – the easier the title the harder it is to creatively interpret it.
And that dilemma has thrown up two angles in this exhibition. The head-on interpretation of the title – something ‘on the nose’ but beautifully executed. Or, the angular interpretation – finding a subtle nuance that gets you around the rules and into new territory. In GREEN / LIGHT we have discovered both and the resulting show is a happy mix. We have thoroughly enjoyable groups of artworks that hit the button just how we’d hoped. And we have others who found that hidden gem and who’ve surprised us.
YOU AND YOUR CAMERA INTRO
A great photograph isn’t just about high resolution or pin-sharp focus; it’s also about an emotional feel, the capture of a fleeting moment, or happy accident. This exhibition is all about those moments. Whatever the subject, we wanted to be able to read a story into each image. When we look, the photograph just gives a clue; something had just happened or was about to happen. We’ll never know exactly what and we fill in the blanks privately.
This exhibition puts each of us in each of the images, and allows our imaginations to explore, and to create a narrative. They say a photograph doesn’t lie but all of us would tell a different story for each image. No one is lying, but the truth is personal, usually private, and different every time.
Whatever the image this is an exhibition about our lives, created by the click of a camera shutter. As such, it’s unique, delightfully diverse, and a powerful collection of stories.
One of the important roles of our online exhibition program is we can offer a different kind of exhibition at The Center, and our digital gallery platform enables us to be more creative experimental with our public experiences. Please share the link with friends and fellow artists so we can keep developing these digital programs.
