WORCESTER ART MUSEUM – ULYSSES – DIWALI

Talk: Art, Modernism, and “Ulysses”

Saturday, November 2, 2024
2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Free with Museum admission

Conference Room

Speakers: Robert Berry (painter, cartoonist, educator, and creator of ULYSSES “seen”) and Dr. Ellen Scheible (Professor of English, Bridgewater State University)

What happens when art, literature, and modernism intersect? James Joyce’s 1922 novel, Ulysses, considered by many to be one of the most important works of literature created in the 20th century, is uniquely tied to art. Join Dr. Ellen Scheible and members of the Worcester Art Museum’s Ulysses reading group in conversation with Robert Berry, creator of ULYSSES “seen”, a comic adaptation of the novel. Berry will discuss his long history of exploring, making, and teaching art through the challenge of reading James Joyce and the many subtle narrative tricks and common structures found in modern painting and writing.
