AAM “FROM MY GARDEN”

“From My Garden”

A Series of Photographs by Gail Rousseau

Community Gallery Exhibition: June 5 th – July 30th, 2024

Autumn Grape Vine by Gail Rousseau

The Community Gallery is located in the lobby of the Attleboro Arts Museum’s Emory Street entrance.

For over a decade the Museum has been pleased to offer this prominent gallery space as an exhibition opportunity for both promising and professional artist members.

Community Gallery artist exhibitions span two-month periods. This extended exhibition period provides member artists more exposure in the museum’s high- traffic Community Gallery space.

A two-month long show will also allow visitors to spend more time with the works on display and provide an opportunity for the scheduling of special group tours and visits with coinciding exhibits in the main gallery.

“My garden has always provided me with a spectacular parade of buds and blossoms to photograph. This series began as an attempt to change how I photographed and presented my images. I was searching for a new and different result which would give me more control over light and shadows,” remarks artist, Gail Rousseau.

Rousseau decided to bring the flowers into the studio, something totally new for her, as she typically worked with natural light in the field. Using a light table to expose the small details that had eluded the artist outdoors, she finally found a workflow that, after many flowers were cut, squashed and picked apart, delivered the final print that she had been working towards.

Rousseau does all her own printing on Hahnemuhle photo rag bright white paper and each image is unique and individually produced.

Gail Rousseau began her journey into photography at The New England School of Photography in Boston, MA and continued to the New Hampshire Institute of Arts in Manchester, NH and the Nikon School at Regis College in Weston, MA. In 2009 she received a scholarship to study Digital Fine Art Printing with George DeWolfe at the Maine Media College in Rockport, ME. Printing and darkroom work was always her favorite part of the art of making a photograph.

Rousseau’s images have been shown at The Lincoln-Levy Gallery, Portsmouth, NH; Manchester NH Art in the Park and Gallery; The Brush Gallery, Lowell, MA; New Hampshire Institute of Art’s Juried Biennial Show; Barrett Art Center, Poughkeepsie, NY; and the Attleboro Arts Museum.

She received an Honorable Mention Fellowship in 2010 from The New Hampshire State Council of The Arts. Her work has been published UNH Cooperative Extension Guide, Preservation Magazine and Around Concord Magazine. Rousseau’s images were featured in Seacoast NH for showcasing the need for the preservation of The Daniel Webster Farm, Franklin NH.
