COMMISSIONER OF EDUCATION NOTES -RIDE

The holidays are here, which means we will soon be entering a new year. From our families to you and yours, we wish you a very happy holiday and fantastic new year!

RI STATE SENATOR D. J. RUGGERIO

On that note, students across the state will be getting new school buildings in the coming years! Recently, the Council on Elementary and Secondary Education approved over $1 billion in school construction projects, marking the single largest school construction approval in Rhode Island K-12 history.

With this approval comes seven new or like-new schools, plus multiple health, safety and educational upgrades throughout 48 total projects. Upgrading our school facilities to 21st-century learning environments is pertinent for students to succeed and have the best learning outcomes possible. When we invest in our children, we are investing in the future of Rhode Island!

We also closed out 2023 by celebrating Computer Science (CS) Education Week, and hosted our CS4RI annual summit at the University of Rhode Island where students from around the Ocean State were able to present their CS projects and engage with industry leaders.

Computer science is a critical skill in our modern workforce, and with our recently passed Readiness-Based Graduation Requirements, students will be adequately prepared for college, career and beyond. Check out some of our recent CS student and educator spotlights to highlight the importance of the subject here.

With the holidays here and vacations beginning, remember that it is crucial to be in school for students to succeed. Enjoy your time with friends and family – but don’t forget that #AttendanceMattersRI, and that it’s #Cool2BeInSchoolRI!
