APL – SEPTEMBER NOTES

A Message from the Director

It’s not quite September as I write this, but I am drinking both a hot and an iced pumpkin coffee. I love this time of year! I can’t wait to see your first day of school photos on social media. I look forward to hearing stories of what you’re most looking forward to this school year. Even more exciting is the announcement that our amazing city has created a community read around a fabulous book first introduced to us by the Parents Book Club several years ago. What is most impressive about this year’s events is that they are funded entirely by Attleboro organizations. This will change things a little, but the spirit of connecting with one another through a good book continues to flourish here in Attleboro. The Community Read website will be up very soon.

Also flourishing in Attleboro is Art, and the APL is happy to be a part of this movement. Last winter the Attleboro Cultural Council awarded the library a grant for the first of what will be a series of murals in the Augat Children’s Room. These faux windows will look out into a variety of landscapes sparking curiosity and imagination. Artist Jason Sawtelle of BlackBeak Studios did an amazing job creating an ocean scene just next to our view of North Main Street! While we don’t really have an ocean view, the creatures in the mural are found in real life, and you can learn more about them with titles you find in the collection!

Building on our new and improved world view, to help our neighbors at The Literacy Center celebrate International Literacy Week, we’re preparing for Hispanic Heritage Month, held September 15 through October 15. The APL proudly shares works by Hispanic authors, illustrators, and artists. Be sure to look for some when you visit.

Did you know that staff use your questions and requests to help create programs and purchase new titles? We’re always sharing what is trending with each other to keep us all in tune with what patrons want. Have a suggestion? Talk to a staff member or use one of the new comment cards located throughout the building. It is the city’s passion for keeping the city clean that inspired the trash clean-up kits coming to the Library of Things next month. With input from Keep Attleboro Beautiful and inspiration from the kids at Serve Up who cleaned our back alley, we’ll be lending kits to everyone who wants to help. Find more details in next month’s newsletter.

Thanks for reading, and see you next month!
