Falmouth, MA: The Falmouth Rod and Gun Club has initiated and managed the transformation of the Child’s River since 2014 through a public-private partnership between the Falmouth Rod and Gun Club, the Town of Mashpee, and the Town of Falmouth. The p
roject has grown since and in 2018, the partnership received a $450,000 grant from the SNEP Watershed Implementation Grants program to restore an abandoned cranberry bog back into its original condition as a natural wetland by removing a dam, restoring wetland topography and hydrology, and establishing native plants. Program Updates
EPA’s Southeast New England Program (SNEP) Announces $1.25M of BIL Funds Available to Support a New Resilience Grant Program for Disadvantaged Communities. The SNEP Opportunity to Advance Resilience (SNEP-SOAR) is a new Program by EPA Region 1 designed to improve climate resiliency throughout high priority disadvantaged communities in Southeast New England. The SNEP-SOAR Fund is intended to support a wide range of project types: planning, implementation, outreach, training, and capacity building/staffing; and will prioritize projects that emphasize strong community input and participation from the outset. EPA plans to release a similar project solicitation every year for the next four years, for a total investment of at least $5 million in SNEP disadvantaged communities by 2027. SNEP in the Field. On Friday July 28 EPA-SNEP staff participated in site visits coordinated by Tom Ardito, director of the SNEP Watershed Implementation Grants (SWIG) program, to view two projects in Massachusetts: the restoration of the Childs River and evaluation of the use of biochar as a bog filter agent to reduce nitrogen (see image above) in Marstons Mills. We thank the project partners who joined us for the visits! Site visits are integral to ensuring strong relationships with our on-the-ground partners, to ensuring that work is being completed at an appropriate pace, and to identify challenges that SNEP and partner staff can collaboratively address to ensure the success of the projects funded by our Program.
