UNESCO INTERNATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

LINDEN PLACE HONORS THE UNESCO INTERNATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE WITH FREE ADMISSION

BRISTOL, RI – Wednesday, August 23rd is The International Day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition as recognized by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). To honor this important date, Linden Place will be offering free admission to the mansion for all visitors. Additionally, guests will see new informational posters displayed throughout the mansion that provide in-depth research and insight into the history of enslavement in Bristol and at Linden Place.

This day of remembrance aims to raise awareness about the horrific nature of the transatlantic slave trade and the long-standing effects it has had on the world. Using SlaveVoyages.org for research, it is estimated that over the course of 350 years, from 1525-1866, 12.5 million enslaved people were taken from Africa to be transported to the Americas via the Middle Passage. Of those taken, around 1.8 million died during the two-month voyage. By the time of the Civil War, the United States had 3.9 million enslaved human beings listed in the 1860 census.

Linden Place Mansion will be open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on August 23rd for visitors to take the self-guided audio tour. Two special 45-minute docent talks will also be offered, one at 11 am and one at 2 pm. The talks are free, but because each group is limited to 20, please make a reservation at lindenplace.org/events-calendar to hold a seat.
