USDA Reports On New England Acreage
CONCORD, NH – The U.S Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) estimated 172 thousand acres of corn planted for all purposes in New England for 2022, down 1% from last year’s acreage of 173 thousand acres.
Connecticut
Corn planted for all purposes in 2023 is estimated at 26 thousand acres, up 4% from 25 thousand acres in 2022.
Growers expect to harvest 53 thousand acres of hay in 2023, up 2% from the 2022 acreage of 52 thousand. Other hay is estimated at 48 thousand acres, up 7% from last year.
Alfalfa hay is estimated at 5 thousand acres, down 29% from last year.
Maine
Corn planted for all purposes in 2023 is estimated at 27 thousand acres, down 7% from last year’s acreage of 29 thousand acres.
Oat planted area for 2023 is estimated at 22 thousand acres, down 15% from 2022. Estimated harvested acres is 19 thousand acres, down 21% from 2022 acreage.
Growers expect to harvest 148 thousand acres of hay in 2023, up 10% from 2022 acreage of 134 thousand. Other hay is estimated at 140 thousand acres, up 12% from the 2022 acreage. Alfalfa hay is estimated at 8 thousand acres, down 11% from the previous year.
Area planted to potatoes is estimated at 53 thousand acres in 2023, up 2% from 2022. Harvested area is estimated at 52.5 thousand acres in 2023, up 2% from 2022 acreage.
Massachusetts
Corn planted for all purposes in 2023 is estimated at a record low 14 thousand acres, unchanged from 2022.
Growers expect to harvest 54 thousand acres of hay, down 10% from last year.
Other hay is estimated at 50 thousand acres, down 9% from the previous year.
Alfalfa hay is estimated at 4 thousand acres, down 20% from the previous year.
New Hampshire
Corn planted for all purposes in 2023 is estimated at 13 thousand acres, no change from 2022.
Growers expect to harvest 41 thousand acres of hay in 2023, down 2% from 2022 acreage of 42 thousand acres.
Other hay is estimated at 36 thousand acres, down 3% from 2022. Alfalfa hay is estimated at 5 thousand acres, the same as last year.
Rhode Island
Corn planted for all purposes in 2023 is estimated at a record low 2 thousand acres, unchanged from the previous year.
Growers expect to harvest 6 thousand acres of hay, down 14% from last year.
Other hay is estimated at 5 thousand acres, down 17% from last year.
Alfalfa hay is estimated at 1 thousand acres, the same as last year.
Vermont
Corn planted for all purposes in 2023 is estimated at 90 thousand acres, unchanged from 2022.
Growers expect to harvest 165 thousand acres of hay, unchanged from 2022.
Other hay is estimated at 150 thousand acres, unchanged from 2022.
Alfalfa hay is estimated at 15 thousand acres, unchanged from 2022.
