LTE: JAMES P. MC GOVERN – MEMBER OF CONGRESS

Dear Neighbors and Friends,

Every 10 years, Americans fill out the census form to tell us who we are and where we are going as a nation.

The results are used to adjust congressional districts across the country so that they are equal in population. Following population shifts here in Massachusetts, the Second District was redrawn to include 17 new cities and towns.

In the last few months, I’ve had the opportunity to meet with local leaders in each and every one of these cities and towns to welcome them to the Second District.

New Cities and Towns in the Second District

Ashland, Hopkinton, Holliston, Southborough, Medway, Bernardston, Colrain, Conway, Leyden, Heath, Buckland, Shelburne, Ashfield, Goshen, Williamsburg, Chesterfield, Westhampton

In the era of Facetime calls and Zoom meetings, it might sound like a throwback. But I got into public service to help people—to make life better for working families like the one I grew up in. That starts with sitting down and starting a conversation.

In many ways, we all want the same things. Better jobs. Higher wages. Safer communities. Great schools. Affordable healthcare.

But here in Massachusetts, we know that every community also has its unique needs.

Often, big projects—the kind that really make a difference for people—involve local, state, and federal partners. They take teamwork and planning. And I believe no community or issue is too small. That’s why meeting with town officials in every corner of the Second District is so important to me.

Along the way, we discussed fixing roads and bridges, updating schools, improving parks, delivering clean air and water, combatting climate change, and more.

I’m thankful to every mayor, select board member and town administrator who gave me the opportunity to sit down and listen. Together, I know we can continue to make Massachusetts one of the best places to live and work in America.

As always, please add your voice to the conversation.
