??F FISHER StudentVeterans

Boston, MA ??? Fisher College is extremely pleased to announce its Student Veteran Center is now open on campus. A ribbon cutting took place on February 15. Fisher President Tom McGovern was joined by Giselle Sterling, Commissioner of Veterans Services for the City of Boston, Brian Marchand of the Fisher Chapter of Student Veterans of America, and Dean Neil Trotta. The Vet Center was created through a generous grant of $10,000 awarded to Fisher by The Home Depot Foundation and Student Veterans of America (SVA).

The newly formed Student Veteran Association was established at Fisher College during the end of the academic year. There are currently 16 members. The purpose of the organization is to provide student veterans with a source of support, advocacy, and camaraderie. The veteran center offers the organization a place to meet, both as a group and socially.

???As a designated Military Friendly School, we are very proud that Student Veterans of America and the Home Depot Foundation have recognized Fisher College and its student veterans in this way,??? said Dr. Neil Trotta, Veterans Liaison for Fisher College. ???Because our student veterans tend to be a little older than the traditional college student and have had some very significant life experiences, it???s important to provide them with a space where they fit in and feel comfortable.???

Student Veterans of America and The Home Depot Foundation teamed up in 2014 to launch the Vet Center Initiative, offering SVA chapters a chance to compete for up to $10,000 in grant money to build or renovate a veteran center. By 2015, 61 campuses earned $500,000 to build or rehabilitate veteran centers that benefit more than 30,000 student veterans. This past year, 50 campus communities were awarded grants of up to $10,000.

About Student Veterans of America: SVA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit coalition of more than 1,300 student veteran chapters, representing over 540,000 veterans in higher education, across the country. SVA’s mission is to provide military veterans with the resources, support, and advocacy to ease veteran and active military students’ transition into higher education and leverage military experience to launch successful careers in high-demand fields after graduation.
