Commissioner’s Memo to Friends of Education

Supporting Our Multilingual Learners

Woonsocket’s Villa Nova Middle School Students

Congratulations are in order for ten local education agencies (LEAs) that were awarded Multilingual Learner (MLL) Success Grants! Recently, I joined Governor Dan McKee and Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos to announce the winners at Woonsocket’s Villa Nova Middle School.

The grants, totaling more than $322,000, will support high-quality instruction and family engagement through implementation of the Blueprint for MLL Success.

In addition to the hundreds of thousands in grants awarded, RIDE released new bilingual “Know Your Rights” videos to help raise awareness of rights and resources available to families of multilingual students.

The announcement comes as Governor McKee’s proposed #RIReady FY24 budget proposes to increase funding for the MLL categorical by $7.8 million from FY23, reflecting the need to invest in the fastest growing student population in the state.

Thank you to all who joined us for the event, including Latino Policy Institute Director Marcela Betancur, RI KIDS COUNT Executive Director Paige Clausius-Parks, and educators and advocates from around Rhode Island.

In partnership,

Angélica Infante-Green Commissioner
