Noticias de la ciudad de Providence

City of Providence News

Dear Neighbor,

I want to thank everyone who responded to our public survey and attended this week’s community meeting. It was incredible to see the response from the community and it was helpful to hear questions asked of all candidates that were informed by community input. I am honored to today announce Oscar L. Perez as the 38th Chief of Police for the Providence Police Department, making him the first Latino police chief in the city’s history.

Chief Perez has been a dedicated member of the Providence Police Department for 29 years, first starting his career as a Patrol Officer and most recently serving as the Deputy Chief. During his tenure, Chief Perez has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and a deep commitment to community policing. He has been instrumental in the development of the Department’s Community Relations Bureau and has implemented a department-wide community policing policy. He has also spearheaded several initiatives aimed at improving police-community relations, which have helped to build trust and strengthen our community.

Chief Perez has a personal connection to our city and a deep understanding of the unique challenges we face. He is a product of the Providence Public Schools and has been a committed member of our community since he immigrated to Providence at the age of 13 from Colombia. His strong ties to our city, combined with his experience and exceptional leadership skills, make him the candidate that I believe will continue to lead our department with excellence, transparency and integrity.

I am confident that under his leadership, the Providence Police Department will continue to provide the highest level of service and protection to all residents, while also strengthening relationships between the police and our community.

We had passionate and experienced applicants for this position and I’m grateful to all who participated in the process. Please join me in welcoming Oscar L. Perez as the new Chief of Police for the Providence Police Department.

Sincerely,

Brett P. Smiley

39th Mayor of Providence
