The University of California Board of Regents approved Katherine S. Newman, currently the system chancellor for academic programs and the senior vice president for economic development at the University of Massachusetts, to be provost and executive vice president for academic affairs in the California system.
An expert on income inequality who recently served as UMass Boston’s interim chancellor, Newman will succeed Michael T. Brown, who is stepping down at the end of 2022 after five years as California’s chief academic officer.
Montserrat College of Art named its academic dean, Brian Pellinen, to serve as interim president, succeeding Kurt T. Steinberg, who in October announced he would leave the Beverly, Mass, college to become chief operating officer of the Peabody Essex Museum in neighboring Salem.
The Community College of Rhode Island appointed Providence College Assistant Dean of Students & Director of Cultural Education Taiwo Adefiyiju to be the community college’s new dean of students.
Massachusetts Gov.-elect Maura Healey chose University of Massachusetts Associate Vice President for Administration and Finance Matthew Gorzkowicz to be the secretary of the commonwealth’s Executive Office for Administration and Finance. At UMass, he oversaw development of a $3.8 billion annual operating budget.
He earlier served as assistant secretary for budget and undersecretary in the Executive Office for Administration and Finance under Gov. Deval Patrick.
