Adaptive Approaches and Creative Journaling for the 21st Century Art Educator

Session I: Virtual Interactive Presentation: Adaptive Art Strategies for All Learners
Art educators can be challenged to create opportunities for students with disabilities in the art room. This workshop focuses on discussing and trying adaptive tools, techniques and media as strategies to support all the learners in the artmaking process. Examples of adapted art activities will also be presented. Specific student and tweaked lesson plan questions are encouraged.
Session II: Smash Book Journals
Join NBAM/ArtWorks! educators Taylor Hickey and Devin ‘Nived Art’ McLaughlin as they lead you step-by-step through creating your own mixed media piano-hinge journals. This project is designed to meld the teaching styles of step-by-step instruction and open ended problem solving. Participants will be given all the tools to create the journal and freedom to think creatively and make a unique art piece.
This type of artful journaling captures ideas with writing, drawing, painting, or pasting memorabilia and other embellishments into your hand made book. You can use this book as a dream journal, scrapbook, poetry book, personal diary, sketch book, or lesson planner! The limit is your own imagination!
All materials will be included but please feel free to bring your own personal embellishments, clippings, or favorite art mediums to personalize your creation. (base paper stock size 9×12)
About the Artists
Susan D. Loesl, MA, WATRL, ATR-BC, graduated from Mount Mary University with a BA in Art Therapy and Adaptive Art Education in 1983 and has an MA from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA in Expressive Arts Therapy. She started her career as an art therapist at St Rose Residence Adolescent Treatment Center for Girls in Milwaukee and then worked for 30 years as an Adaptive Art Specialist/Art Therapist in the Assistive Technology Program for the Specialized Services Department of the Milwaukee Public Schools in Milwaukee, WI and retired from MPS in June 2019.
Her primary role was to work with art specialists and special education teachers to adapt art materials, tools, and techniques for students from early childhood through high school with disabilities in self-contained and inclusive settings. Susan continues to collaborate with school social workers, counselors and psychologists to include art and art therapy therapeutic interventions. In September 2019, Susan continued her work part time at Fairview South School in the Elmbrook School District, working part time in adaptive art with students with significant challenges. She is an Adjunct Faculty at Mount Mary University and presents at national conferences related to art education, art therapy, persons with disabilities and assistive technology. Susan presents workshops, in-service trainings and consults regarding adaptive arts for schools, universities and arts organizations.
She is also an author of four chapters in adaptive arts strategies’ books, and two white papers on adaptive arts strategies. Susan’s goal is to create increased opportunities for students with disabilities to be as independent as possible in their artmaking.
Taylor Hickey is a printmaker, bookmaker, and sculptor working out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Born in Southeast Texas, Taylor earned her BA in Drawing and Printmaking from McNeese State University and went on to earn an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in 2021.
She developed a body of work which pays homage to the human endeavor to understand the universe at large.
Devin “Nived” McLaughlin is a multi-faceted artist and educator with an A.A. in Fine Art.
His specialties include painting, drawing and sculpture. Works made by Devin are retained in private collections across the United States.”
