Dear Neighbor,

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, I would like to acknowledge all of the profound contributions our Hispanic community has made in our city, state and throughout our nation.

Providence is a community of immigrants, and together, our unique perspectives, culture and heritage have built a strong and vibrant city. I was proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with members of the Hispanic community this past week.

Opportunities to celebrate and recognize Hispanic cultures are everywhere in Providence. From Broad Street, where you can find many locally owned restaurants as well as annual events like the Dominican and Guatemalan festivals and parades, to our local arts scene, which as diverse as the people who live in our city, to our public safety personnel, teachers, construction workers, and so many others. There is evidence of the talent and impact of Hispanic communities everywhere you look in Providence.

It is difficult to imagine what Providence would be like today had it not been for Hispanic cultural influences. These influences are an essential part of our identity as a city. I am proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, and I know that these communities will continue to make a great impact on our city, state and country.

Sincerely

Jorge O. Elorza
