LTE: BRETT SMILEY – RESPECT FOR MARRIAGE LAW

Dear Neighbors and Friends

Today, on my 14th wedding anniversary, I’m reflecting on the fragility of marriage equality and LGBTQ+ rights in the wake of our conservative Supreme Court’s actions and opinions recently.

It was only 9 years ago that we were leading the fight here in Rhode Island for our right to marry who we love. In fact, Jim and I first got married in Massachusetts in 2008 because it wasn’t yet legal in Rhode Island. Every day, I am proud to live in a city that values diversity and a state that respects my marriage. The reality is, that sense of security and safety is in jeopardy for many people right now.

This week, Congress is set to consider the Respect for Marriage Act. This law would repeal DOMA and other outdated and discriminatory state laws and would legally recognize same-sex and interracial marriages across the country. Now, more than ever, we need elected leaders that will stand up for our rights and the rights of every single neighbor in Providence.

I will be a mayor that fights to protect our LGBTQ+ community and the rights of others because it is work I have been doing for decades and I know just how important it is.
