Providence Children’s Museum Celebrates 45 Years of Play! Providence, RI –Providence Children’s Museum (PCM) will celebrate its 45th Birthday with a party for all on Saturday, June 18.
During the day, PCM will offer free admission, birthday party activities, a favor table, raffle items, and festive desserts. Sponsors of the Birthday Party include Hasbro, Locke Lord, Residential Properties, Costal 1 Credit Union, and Peace of Mind Nannies. Rhode Island’s first and only children’s museum opened its doors in June 1977 in Pawtucket, following years of committed work by volunteers and community leaders.
PCM moved to its current location in Providence’s historic Jewelry District in 1997. With the move, the Museum tripled its physical space and audience; it has welcomed millions of visitors and been named Best Museum in Rhode Island by ProJo Readers for the last four years.
PCM’s 45th year marks an important moment for the museum as it sets sail into previously uncharted territory. PCM was recently one of ten museums nationwide to receive $100,000 from the NYC Media Lab & Verizon Innovative Learning Museum Initiative to develop to create new educational content for the Verizon Innovative Learning HQ portal.
This award builds on a recent National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) grant PCM received to develop digital education materials on local immigration history for virtual field trips and museum programming.
“Not only will these resources be used to enhance the experience of Rhode Island schoolchildren and our visitors, our stories will be introduced to children nationwide.”
Caroline Payson, Executive Director says. “The next 5 years will look very different than the last 45 – but always grounded in core mission to champion play.”
Preregistration is available for Birthday Party celebrations during morning and afternoon sessions. An adult focused evening at the museum, previously scheduled for June, has been moved to fall.
For up to the minute information, check out PCM’s website and social media channels. Providence Children’s Museum serves children and adults of all backgrounds and from all communities. Its focus is on children, ages 1 to 11, and the adults who care for them by presenting hands-on, play-based exhibits and programs that explore arts, culture and science, technology, engineering, and math.
