NELLIE’S NOTES

A Road Map to Cybersecurity in Every RI Community

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and last week Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea announced a statewide cyber mapping project to help protect every Rhode Island community from future attacks.

The project would map the computer network infrastructure of every municipality to identify potential connections to the Central Voter Registration System (CVRS), which is maintained by Secretary Gorbea’s office.

“We’ve built Rhode Island into a national leader on election security,” said Secretary Gorbea . “But cyber threats are evolving every day, and government must keep up. I will continue to spearhead projects like this to ensure that Rhode Islanders can trust the integrity of our systems.”

Working with Protocol Networks, a Rhode Island-based information technology company, Secretary Gorbea’s cyber mapping project comes at no cost to municipalities. It is funded by a grant Secretary Gorbea secured from the Department of Homeland Security, along with Help America Vote Act (HAVA) dollars she allocated for this work.
