PROVIDENCE, RI – This summer, Doors Open RI is taking Rhode Islanders on a deep dive into our waterways through a multimedia, collaborative storytelling project. Through a combination of online and onsite experiences, Providence Waterways invites our community to immerse in place-based stories, sounds, and events that explore Providence’s water. Providence Waterways launches on Saturday, August 21st with TIDAL RESONANCE, featuring live performances and a Sound Journey through our waterways.

Throughout history and across our communities, water has acted as both a key to life and a force of destruction; central to equity yet a carrier of injustice. Running through rivers, pipes, and groundwater, waterways are a powerful force that connect all Providence residents.

Together, we’ll explore the depths of the Combined Sewage Overflow Tunnel, imagine the day in 1900 when hundreds of fish rained from the sky onto Olneyville, follow the changing shape of our rivers, and more.

Three primary portals will guide our journey:

An online StoryMap experience featuring an ever-growing collection of short stories, articles, archival images and fun facts about Providence Waterways. Edited by Traci Picard and Sam Coren, and featuring contributions from individuals and organizations across the city, this StoryMap will be a lasting resource for in-depth explorations into our waterways. (Available now in English, with a Spanish version coming soon).

Tidal Resonance: An afternoon of immersive, participatory artistic experiences inspired by our waterways and their tides on Saturday August 21, 2-5:30pm in India Point Park. Curated by Shey Rivera and Seth Tourjee, Tidal Resonance features performances by Becci Davis, Lilly E. Manycolors and Anthony “AM.” Andrade. Performances will happen in two rounds: starting at 2pm and again at 4pm. Bus, bike, walk, or run your way over to India Point Park for an afternoon of immersive art and sound. Interested attendees are encouraged to RSVP through our facebook event

Sound Journeys: Debuting as part of the Tidal Resonance event on August 21st, this augmented reality, locative sound project aims to get residents out and about, exploring the areas around the waterways of Providence RI. Members of the public will be able to listen to and contribute their voices to a growing body of place-based audio addressing the histories, sounds and stories connected to this city’s water as they walk through the city with their mobile device.

“The past year has dramatically shifted the ways in which we relate to our City and neighbors. The physical and social landscape has been shifting under our feet and above our heads, and a reckoning of our histories becomes just as urgent as the need to change our relationship to land and water.” says Doors Open RI Director Caroline Stevens.

Providence Waterways is a project of Doors Open RI, co-directed by Caroline Nye Stevens and Francesca Gallo, with research by Sam Coren and Traci Picard, artistic curation by Seth Tourjee and Shey Rivera Ríos, and audio production by Jacob Sokolov-Gonzalez and Nadav Assor with support from Halsey Burgund.

This project is made possible by the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities, Rhode Island Foundation, Rhode Island State Council for the Arts, Providence Department of Art Culture and Tourism, and the Providence Streets Coalition.
