Celebrating 40 Years of the George Wiley Center

“My name is Maya Wiley and I’m the proud daughter of George Alvin Wiley.

And from me and my family, thank you, thank you, thank you, George Wiley Center for carrying on his legacy in his name.

You know the George Wiley Center, celebrating 40 years, has been a place that has recognized that the folks who are directly impacted by a broken economy, the folks who are directly impacted by systemic racism, by sexism, by all the things that are broken in society, have to be part of shaping the answer, the work, the solutions, that fix what’s broken.

And that was central to my father’s work and his vision. And so to the GWC I say happy anniversary. Thank you for being a cradle, a container, that helps folks come together, not just to solve their own problems, but to solve it for everyone in their situation, and to do it with dignity, because that is democracy.

Happy anniversary, and thank you!”
