BRIDGEWATER STAE UNIVERSITY: MARTINA B. ARNDT
Dr. Martina B. Arndt, Ph.D.
Total Solar Eclipses (when the moon blocks the Sun) provide unique opportunities to study the upper atmosphere of our nearest star. With 12 expeditions to her credit, Dr. Arndt has observed eclipses around the world and in 2019, was fortunate enough to bring three BSU students on her journey to Chile. During this Aluminar, she will share some of her data, results and adventures.

Dr. Martina B. Arndt, Ph.D., Interim Associate Dean of the Bartlett College of Science and Mathematics & Professor of Physics, earned her BA in Astronomy from Wellesley College (’91) and her Master’s and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of New Hampshire (’97 and ’20).
She is currently working on her MBA at BSU and expects to graduate in Spring ’21. Since 1997, she has been part of the Solar Wind Sherpas, a research team that travels the world to gather data from total solar eclipses. Dr. Arndt works closely with students on exoplanet research and is BSU’s representative in the NASA’s Massachusetts Space Grant Consortium. She has served as a co-investigator on multiple National Science Foundation grants, totaling over $300,000, that have supported research activities on eclipses, as well as women in STEM.
Since joining the physics faculty at BSU in 2000, she has worn many hats including professor, mentor, chair (of physics and economics!), student and co-coordinator for the Center for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship (CARS). Dr. Arndt, her husband, their 15-year-old daughter and 1-year-old Cavachon puppy live in Grafton, Massachusetts.
