Author to discuss new book on the 1972-73 PC Friars Team at the Weaver Library
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Getting ready for March Madness? Author Paul Lonardo will discuss his new book Homegrown: The Making of the 1972-73 Providence College Friars at the Weaver Library on Monday, February 24, 2020 at 7 pm.
PAUL LONARDO
It has been nearly 50 years since an exciting and talented Providence College basketball team came within a whisker of making it to the 1973 NCAA Finals. According to Lonardo, had PC’s dominant center Marvin Barnes not been injured in the semifinal game against Memphis, the team likely would have met up with Bill Walton and the mighty UCLA Bruins for a Finals showdown.
Homegrown reveals how that once-in-a-lifetime team was assembled. The book is a retrospective of a remarkable season as well as a history of the school’s basketball program.
As a Rhode Island author growing up in North Providence, the same hometown as the Friars’ superstar point guard Ernie DiGregorio, Lonardo recaps how this PC team captured the imaginations and hearts of so many.
Other works by Lonardo include both fiction and nonfiction in a variety of genres, from true crime to romance. A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, he also studied filmmaking / screenwriting at Columbia College Hollywood.
