“ROSE” AT WEAVER LIBRARY

Rose, a one-woman show about Rose Kennedy, to be performed at the Weaver Library

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Weaver Library is proud to present Rose, a one-woman play by Laurence Leamer and performed by Linda Monchik on Monday, October 7, 2019 at 7 pm.

Directed by Connie Crawford, Rose is set in 1969 in the parlor of the Kennedys’ Hyannis Port compound a week after Teddy’s fateful accident at Chappaquiddick. Rose is the story of the triumphs and sorrows of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, her family, her husband, and nine children, as told by the matriarch herself.

“Ruled by the dictates of her father, her husband and the priests of the Catholic Church, Rose learned early on to live by a code of submission and self-suppression” wrote the Chicago Sun-Times. Showbiz Chicago noted, “The writing is quite candid and brutally real.” “It is often the mother who holds the family together and champions them forward. “Such is the case with Rose Kennedy”, says Monchik, who has done considerable research on her life.

Leamer, an accomplished journalist and author, has written extensively about the Kennedys. He based his play on 40 hours of audio interviews with Rose Kennedy conducted by Robert Coughlan, the ghost writer of her 1974 memoir.

Monchik is an award-winning actor, having performed in and around the South Coast for over 25 years.  She has had leading roles in theatres from Newport to Providence, Boston and Cape Cod, and has appeared in The Gamm, 2nd Story, Barker Playhouse, Commonwealth Shakespeare and most recently at the Cotuit Arts Center.

In addition to Rose, she also produced, performed and toured other one-woman shows: The Belle of Amherst and Golda’s Balcony, all to rave reviews.

Rose is free and open to the public however seating is limited. Doors will open at 6:30 pm.

This performance has been made possible by the Friends of the East Providence Public Library.
