BRISTOL ART MUSEUM

“Unraveling Our Truths”

A BRISTOL logo-email-magic

The Bristol Art Museum is proud to present, Dead Ringer, a provocative and timely exhibit that promises to challenge viewers’ preconceived notions. These works reflect our socio-political moment — bombarded by images of violence, confounded by the surge of “fake news”, and overwhelmed by relentless media.

The exhibit asks viewers to slow down, consider what they think they see, and discover deeper meanings. The thought-provoking works in this show come to us from 9 prominent artists from New York, Wisconsin, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

At first glance, the artists in Dead Ringer construct familiar objects and images — cross stitch, press photos, glassware, designer bags, manhole covers. As viewers consider the realities behind these works, new meanings and symbols emerge. Shari Mendelson’s work may look like glass or ceramic but upon closer inspection “… a logo, recycling stamp or expiration date reveals the actual material.

Using recycled plastic to make works that reference objects of the past offers me a space to playfully explore the transformation of form and material while reflecting on issues of history, culture and value.”

According to Art New England’s exhibit preview, “Unraveling Our Truths: Dead Ringer” by Elizabeth Maynard, “All of this close looking can disconcert, yet it also delights… Dead Ringer points to the darkness that belies the beautiful, but it also opens us up to the possibilities of lightness in this often heavy time.” Please be advised, some attendees may find certain themes and images in this exhibit difficult.

Dead Ringer, curated by Elizabeth Duffy, will be on display June 7th through July 14th at 10 Wardwell Street in Bristol, RI
