Bishop Feehan High School Announces Top Students in Class of 2019

ATTLEBORO, MA – Bishop Feehan High School proudly announces its top-ranked students in the Class of 2019, headlined by a trio of young women who have excelled inside and outside the classroom during their four years on the school’s Holcott Drive campus.
These ten soon-to-be graduates rank the highest among a class of 257, which will graduate on May 31. The Class of 2019 will be the 55th to graduate from Feehan and will be another class with 100% of graduates accepted into one or more colleges and universities.

In addition, the top three students (in order and with profiles below) are: Valedictorian Megan McFarland (Attleboro, MA) (town); Salutatorian Nicole O’Brien (Wrentham, MA); Tree Dedicator (third in class) Eleanor Kominiarek (North Attleboro, MA).
“The Class of 2019 has left its mark on Bishop Feehan in so many ways, led by these outstanding top students,” said Bishop Feehan President, Tim Sullivan. “Feehan is immensely proud of these young people and can’t wait to watch where their talent and drive take them next and into the future.”
Valedictorian
Megan McFarland is the daughter of James and Teri McFarland of Attleboro, MA and a member of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church in Seekonk, MA.
Megan has been highly involved in the school community and has taken every opportunity to establish an impressive record of leadership, scholastic achievements, athletic accomplishments, and community service activities. She is a member of the Science, Spanish, Math, English, History and National Honor Societies. Megan has earned countless accolades, including scoring first in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on the Level 6 2019 National Spanish Exam. She received a Gold Medal on the National Spanish Exam each year of high school and the Highest GPA Award in Math, Science, Social Studies, World Language and Theology during her freshman and sophomore year. She is the recipient of the Harvard Book Award, the Bertie Green Travel Award, and the Side-Out/American Volleyball Coaches Association National Dig Pink Award. She earned a Silver Key in Poetry in the Boston Globe Scholastic 2016-2017 Art & Writing Awards and a Gold Key the following year. Megan has also had numerous poems published in Teen Ink Magazine. Her junior year, she was recognized as a Southeastern Massachusetts Conference Mathematics League All Star.
Aside from being an excellent student, Megan has been quite busy and involved as a member of the Feehan Volleyball Team, Mass Premier Volleyball Team, Art Club, Math Team (Captain), Poetry Club (President), Project Unite, Pro-Life, Poetry Out Loud, Shamrock Leadership Institute, and the Sports Statistics Boston Leadership Institute. Megan is also the creator of the Simpler Subjects YouTube Channel, where she explains topics in Mathematics and Spanish. Her service work includes volunteering at Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Special Olympics, ELL Summer Camp and with Feehan’s Volleyball Camps, Amigos Program, Freshman Academy, Peer Tutoring Program, Thanksgiving Baskets and Santa Shops.
Megan will attend the College of William & Mary, where she is recognized as a James Monroe Scholar, one of the most academically distinguished undergraduates. Megan plans to pursue a degree in Mathematics and a minor in Hispanic Studies.
Salutatorian
Nicole O’Brien is the daughter of Joseph and Cynthia O’Brien of Wrentham, MA and a member of St. Mary’s Parish in Wrentham, MA.
Nicole gracefully balances excellence in class, faith, extracurricular activities, volunteer service, and work commitments. Nicole has achieved First Honors throughout high school and is currently a member the Science, French, Math, English, and National Honor Societies. Nicole received the Bronze Medal on the National French Exam for the past two years and she was the recipient of the Yale College Book Award. During her freshman year, she was recognized at both the Massachusetts Regional Science Fair and Bishop Feehan Science Fair for her contributions. As a junior, Nicole won first place in the Knights of Columbus International Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest, which encourages youth to become citizens grounded in their faith through creative writing.
Aside from being an excellent student, Nicole plays an important role within the student body at Bishop Feehan and in her community. She is a member of the Animal Rights Club (Co-President), the St. Vincent de Paul Club, and the Women Inspiring Strength & Empowerment Club. Her service commitment also includes altar serving and teaching religious education at Saint Mary’s Parish in Wrentham and helping at the Bishop Feehan Santa Shop each year. She also volunteers for two hours each week at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro.
Nicole was recently awarded the Presidential Catholic Scholarship at Regis College, where she plans to pursue a degree in Nursing.
Tree Dedicator (Third-Ranked Student)
Eleanor (Ellie) Grace Kominiarek is the daughter of Stephen and Sharon Kominiarek of North Attleboro, MA) and a member of St. Mark’s Parish in Attleboro Falls, MA.
She is a member of the National, English, History, Math, Science, Spanish and Art National Honor Societies and currently serves as an Executive Board Member with the History Honor Society and the President of the Spanish Honor Society. Ellie was honored with a gold medal for achieving the top overall average in Social Studies as a sophomore, earned Silver Medals for her stellar performance on the National Spanish Exam for the past three years, and was the recipient of The College of the Holy Cross Book Award. Over the past four years, Ellie has earned high honor roll status on a consistent basis.
Ellie balances her outstanding academic skills with a sense of character and integrity. Captain of the Varsity tennis team, she has been a pivotal team member for the past three years. Since freshman year, Ellie has been a mainstay with Student Council as a Homeroom Officer and currently serves as the Student Council Secretary. Ellie worked tirelessly with the Mock Trial Team for three years. She is Co-President of the House of Compassion, a Project Unite Coordinator, a Big Sister, and serves as a tutor not only with the Amigos Program and the Feehan ARC, but also volunteers over the summer for an English Language Learners Camp. Ellie has volunteered for the past two summers at Camp Sunshine in Casco, Maine. She stocks the food pantry at St. Joseph’s Church on a regular basis and serves as an Altar Server. She brings her skills to support programs such as the Feehan Santa Shop as well as in raising money for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.
Ellie will be studying Political Science at Boston College in the fall.
