WOMR’s Birthday Auction Features Commissioned Album Covers from Local Artists

Provincetown, MA, April 6, 2019: On Sunday, April 14th, WOMR—Cape Cod’s community radio—is celebrating its birthday with a party and auction at the former Eastern Schoolhouse in Provincetown.

The station asked several dozen local artists to re-conceive album art using their own style and media, and the results are stunning, bringing together painting and drawing, photography, sculpture, and collage.
Many pieces are visual love letters to music and culture, some quote original record releases with affection or nostalgia, and others reflect satire and social commentary. As a bonus, many of the artists concealed a personal playlist on the back to be revealed to the winning bidder!
Bert Yarborough- A1
Sian Robertson blends map language and collage in a tribute to the great Warhol collaboration with Velvet Underground. Jerome Greene celebrates the heart of blues and the Capes’ bar-band tradition.
Gaston Lacombe’s colorful cover could be a contemporary soundtrack or a psychedelic throwback, while Chris Sousa’s re-imagining of a lost Grateful Dead classic is worthy of its history. Helen Grimm’s expressionistic palette starts with a Led Zeppelin cover and produces a richly original holy mountain brought home to Cape Cod.
Christopher Sousa- Aint That Heaven Sent
Paul Rizzo’s watercolors are poetic and searching personal confessions. Joey Mars’ take on the early Beatles deploys his raw graphic language; Andrew Clemons masters visual puns, uniting Bill Evans with Star Wars references; Mark Adams’ draftsman-like renderings are environmental laments for a dystopian time. Jimmy Lee Curtis and MP Landis show bold minimalist images that befit serious listening to classics.
Lydia Marie Hicks, James Ryan, Stephen Wells, Bert Yarborough and Bailey Bob Bailey meld sculpture and collage into cultural and political statements. Suzanne Packard, Georgene Reildl, Dianne Longchamps, and Margaret Furness make painterly tributes to artists from Piaf and Simone to Coltrane and Hartman.
Finally, Larry Collins’ academic classicism is a good match for the sacred undertones of Godspell.
