I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO film to screen at the Weaver Library
Weaver Library, located at 41 Grove Avenue, East Providence, RI, will screen the documentary I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO: James Baldwin and Race in America on Monday, February 4, 2019 at 6:30 pm.
A 2017 Oscar-nominated documentary written, produced, and directed by Raoul Peck and narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO explores the continued peril America faces from institutionalized racism.
Based on a book that the American novelist (If Beale Street Could Talk) never had a chance to finish, the film uses Baldwin’s own words alongside rich, archival material to tell the stories of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends–Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. The result is a timely examination of race in America, and a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter.
This program is free and open to all.
