From a Pulitzer Prize???winning journalist comes an exuberant memoir of personal loss and longing, and finding connection on the Azorean Islands of the Atlantic Ocean.
While reporting from rural California, Diana Marcum connects with a diaspora whose longing for the ???old country??? powerfully speaks to her. Stalled in her career and mourning the loss of her parents, she follows this community home to the Azores, nine volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic, where bulls run down the street, every village throws a summer festa and the ocean is a million shades of blue.
Meanwhile, California is in a terrible drought, the wildfires never seem to end, and Diana finds herself dreaming of the Azores and chuva ???a rain so soft you don???t notice when it begins or ends. With her troublesome Labrador retriever Murphy in tow, Diana returns to the Portuguese islands, where she finds friendship and a love she never anticipated.
With sparkling warmth and wit, The Tenth Island transports readers to a place of adventure and beauty and reminds us that even in the face of volcanoes and droughts, grief and loss, life comes rushing back.
This event is proudly sponsored by the Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies , the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Rhode Island College, and the Rhode Island Day of Portugal Organization .
