“We couldn’t be happier to welcome Adriana Herrera to Linden Place for these workshops. Her expertise and craft as an author is unparalleled, and we hope local writers will take advantage of this opportunity to learn from her in person,” said Linden Place Executive Director Cara Massey.
The first workshop, Writing Trauma Survivors: Understanding Your Character’s Experience, takes place at 10:00 AM and lasts three hours ($40 general, $35 for Linden Place members). In this session, authors will gain a deeper understanding of trauma—what it is, how it impacts a person’s life, and how different types of trauma, particularly childhood experiences, shape an individual’s thoughts, behaviors, and physical responses.
Participants will learn how to incorporate these elements into their writing in an informed and respectful way.

Later in the day, at 3:00 PM, Herrera will lead Writing The Diaspora: Create Diverse Characters with History & Depth, a 90-minute workshop ($30 general, $25 for Linden Place members).
This session will provide writers with the tools to research and craft diverse characters with authenticity. Participants will explore which stories are appropriate to tell and how to develop characters in a way that honors their experiences and cultural backgrounds.
“These workshops are a natural next step for Linden Place to provide opportunities for local writers to engage with history and challenging subject matter while creating new works, which is the major theme of the Linden Place Writers’ Residency,” said Massey.
Born and raised in the Caribbean, Herrera has built a celebrated career writing stories that center diverse voices and experiences, earning starred reviews from Publisher’s Weekly and Booklist.
Her work has been featured on The TODAY Show, Entertainment Weekly, OPRAH Magazine, NPR, Library Journal, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. In addition to being a prolific writer, Herrera is a trauma therapist in New York City, specializing in working with survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Her expertise in both storytelling and psychology brings a unique depth to her workshops, making them a must-attend event for writers of all backgrounds.

Due to high demand, these workshops are expected to sell out, and early registration is strongly encouraged. Sign up for both workshops and receive a $10 discount.
