CALLING ALL WRITERS! SUBMISSIONS OPEN AS HISTORIC HOUSE
MUSEUM RESIDENCY ENTERS 4TH YEAR
Creative programming expands at Linden Place with public writing workshops.
BRISTOL, R.I. – Submissions are open as the Linden Place Writers’ Residency enters its fourth year. Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts creative writers over the age of 18 are invited to apply to the no-cost program that provides on-site workspace for the month of April on the grounds of the historic house museum.
Writers also receive archival and research support, consults with a sensitivity consultant who has expertise in early Black history, a travel stipend, press and publicity, an audience to hear their works in progress, a free tour, and discounted room rates at the Bradford-Dimond Norris B&B next door for anyone who wishes to stay nearby during the program.
To date, 23 writers of fiction, narrative nonfiction, poetry, screenwriting, and playwriting have gone through the program, using the opportunity to explore, examine, and interpret the museum’s rich and complicated history through contemporary points of view. “There’s an alchemy that happens when writers work here,” says Leigh Medeiros, program administrator. “They mine their identities and viewpoints to express aspects of the museum’s complex history through their chosen mediums, which allows everyone to better understand that history.”
This year’s esteemed judges include former Bristol resident Rosaria Munda, Young Adult author of the critically acclaimed fantasy series the Aurelian Cycle trilogy and forthcoming Confessions of a Junior Spy, Steve Edwards, whose personal essays have been published in The Yale Review, The Sun, Orion, Literary Hub, and Longreads, and Lissette Acosta Corniel, who writes about writes about gender-based violence, free and enslaved black women, and resistance in colonial Hispaniola, and edited the book Transatlantic Bondage: Slavery and Freedom in Spain, Santo Domingo, and Puerto Rico.
Under the direction of Linden Place’s new Executive Director, Cara Massey, the residency has expanded to include public workshops with notable authors, including USA Today bestselling author Adriana Herrera. A number of seats at each workshop will be reserved for alumni and current residents to attend the events free of charge. “The Linden Place Writers’ Residency is one of the only programs of its kind, and the residents and alumni create beautiful, thought-provoking work.
We are thrilled to welcome a new cohort of residents to Linden Place in the tradition of the many writers who have visited our historic property, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.”
Submissions are open through January 30th at LindenPlace.org/writers-residency. Beginner to expert writers from around the state are encouraged to apply, including college students who fit the criteria. Massachusetts writers within 25 miles of Linden Place may also apply.
