City of Pawtucket and Care New England Explore Partnership to Expand Healthcare Services with Potential New Medical Facility
PAWTUCKET – The City of Pawtucket is in the early stages of exploring a collaborative project with Care New England to improve healthcare access for residents through the potential development of a new medical facility at 104 Brewster Street.
The proposed project, which is still in its initial planning and evaluation phase, envisions a state-of-the-art healthcare center that could serve the Pawtucket community. Early plans include the possibility of demolishing the existing building and constructing a new three-story, 70,000-square-foot medical facility.
The new facility may include expanded healthcare offerings such as a seven-day-a-week urgent care center, aimed at providing residents with improved access to medical care. In addition, discussions are underway about a potential partnership with Brown University to support medical residency programs and foster the development of future healthcare professionals.
“This potential project represents an exciting opportunity to address the healthcare needs of our community,” said Mayor Donald R. Grebien. “While we are still in the exploratory stages, our partnership with Care New England holds the promise of enhancing services for Pawtucket residents and creating new opportunities for healthcare education.”

“Care New England is engaged in an open and productive dialogue with the City of Pawtucket about how it might best collaborate to potentially bring additional healthcare programs, services, and education to Pawtucket and its surrounding communities,” said Michael Wagner, MD, president and CEO, Care New England Health System.
As this project is still in the planning phase, a phased approach is being considered to minimize any potential disruptions to current medical services. Preliminary discussions suggest that partial demolition of the existing building could take place first, followed by the construction of the new facility. Essential services will remain available to patients throughout the development process if it proceed.
Preliminary Timeline (subject to change based on final plans):
September 2025 (tentative): Potential start of construction on the new building.
December 2026 (tentative): Possible move into the newly constructed facility.
August 2027 (tentative): Final demolition of the remaining portion of the existing building.
For clarification, the proposed Care New England facility is not the former Memorial Hospital. They are two separate entities, and this potential facility would be located behind the former Memorial Hospital. If built, it would eliminate reliance on shared utilities with the former hospital building, increasing operational efficiency and reducing costs.
As the City of Pawtucket and Care New England continue to explore this potential project, both parties remain committed to enhancing healthcare services for the community. More information will be shared as planning progresses, and further details become available.
