STATION 1 REOPENS

West Avenue Fire Station Re-Opens After Extensive Renovations

PAWTUCKET – The City of Pawtucket has officially re-opened Fire Station One, on West Avenue, after being closed for seven years.

The station, which has been a staple in the neighborhood for over a century, will now resume its role in safeguarding local residents.

The grand reopening ceremony was attended by city officials, police and firefighters, and enthusiastic residents who have eagerly anticipated the station’s return. The $5 million renovation project, funded through building bonds and American Rescue Plan Money focused on modernizing the facility while preserving its historic charm.

Mayor Donald Grebien expressed his enthusiasm about the station’s reopening. “This station is more than just a building; it’s a cornerstone of our community. Its return is a testament to our commitment to enhancing public safety and investing in our neighborhoods. We’re thrilled to see Fire Station 1 back in action.”

“The neighborhood has been waiting for this moment, and we’re excited to finally be back,” said Fire Chief John Trenteseaux. “The support from our community has been incredible, and we look forward to continuing our tradition of service right here in West Avenue.”

Police Chief Tina Goncalves also expressed her support for the reopening, noting the positive impact on overall public safety. “The reopening of Fire Station 1 is a win for our entire community. It enhances our ability to work closely with the fire department, ensuring that we can all respond to emergencies more effectively. This revitalized station will play a key role in keeping Pawtucket safe and secure.”

The original Fire Station 1, built in 1912, was forced to close in 2017 due to mold issues that posed health risks to firefighters. After extensive discussions and evaluations, city officials decided to undertake a major renovation rather than integrating the station into a new public safety complex. Renovations include: expanding the building from just under 6,000 to 7,500 square feet, a new apparatus bay that will house the ladder truck, as well as a new fitness and laundry room for the men and women of the station.
