RIDOT PARTNERS WITH GSSNE

Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England Partners with RIDOT

Warwick, R.I. (July 25, 2024)—Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England partnered with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) on June 20th for a STEM Career Exploration Tour. Girl Scouts across three councils joined together to explore career opportunities in fields such as project management, engineering, planning, traffic safety, finance, and maintenance.

Over 30 Girl Scouts rotated between stations to experience a mix of hands-on activities and live demonstrations.

Girl Scouts were able to fly a drone, learned about transportation management, used a watershed model to learn about water conservation, and more.

Girl Scouts then walked over to the Rhode Island State House to hear from an expansive panel of female RIDOT leaders.

Participants then practiced their interviewing skills with a game of networking bingo. This was an incredible chance for Girl Scouts to learn more about what these RIDOT employees do and figure out if this is something they’d like to do for a future career.

After the visit with RIDOT, the Girl Scouts met with Rhode Island Governor, Dan McKee and First Lady Susan McKee. Girl Scouts were able to learn about Litter-Free Rhode Island and its newly introduced Girl Scout patch program.

Governor and First Lady spoke with the Girl Scouts about the importance of cleaning up their communities and participants were gifted trash grabbers to use in their own communities to make their communities litter free.

Nicole Harvey, Troop Leader from Fall River said of the experience, “This was an amazing event! Excellent variety and a lot of fun. Thank you and please run it again. I’m positive more girls will love the experience too.”

Donna Iverson-Arata, parent chaperone from Canton, MA added, “The RIDOT event was AWESOME, and SO interesting. I learned a lot!”

Girl Scouts aims to provide unique experiences that our members can’t get anywhere else. To see what we’re offering this fall, check out gssne.org/events.

We Are Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts bring their dreams to life and work together to build a better world. Through programs across Southeastern New England, girls and gender-expansive youth of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves in a safe space as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges.

Backed strong friendships and trusted adult volunteers, mentors, and millions of alums, Girl Scouts lead the way as they find their voices and make changes that affect the issues most important to them.

Girl Scouts feel comfortable trying new things without the pressure to be perfect, speaking their minds, and processing their emotions in healthy ways.

They discover how being different makes them special, strengthens their sense of belonging, and, ultimately, makes them proud to be themselves.

That’s the magic of Girl Scouting. To join us, volunteer, reconnect, or donate, visit gssne.org, follow @gssne on Instagram, follow @GirlScoutsofSNE on Twitter, and like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GSSNE.
