“JANE AUSTEN” AT LINDEN PLACE

Join Us at Linden Place for a Captivating Historic Character Portrayal: “Jane Austen: Who Dares to be an Authoress”

Linden Place is thrilled to announce a special theatrical event featuring a historic character portrayal of one of literature’s most beloved authors, Jane Austen. Join us on Saturday, August 3, at 2:00 PM for “Jane Austen: Who Dares to be an Authoress,” a compelling and immersive short play written and performed by the talented Laura Rocklyn. Fans of Bridgerton will love this peek behind the curtain at the life of the author whose works inspired the popular series.

Set in the year 1815, the performance captures a momentous occasion in Jane Austen’s life as she returns from a prestigious visit to the Prince Regent’s London residence. This invitation prompts Austen to reflect on her journey from the daughter of a country clergyman to a celebrated author. She shares her innermost thoughts and feelings about her novels and the profound impact their publication has had on her life.

Originally presented under the title “Miss Austen at Home” at The Swan’s Island Educational Society in Maine in the summer of 2013, “Jane Austen: Who Dares to be an Authoress” has since captivated audiences at libraries, museums, and educational institutions nationwide. Laura Rocklyn’s dedication to research and her dynamic portrayal brings Austen’s world to life, making each performance a unique and evolving experience.

Laura Rocklyn’s impressive resume includes performances with theaters across the country and roles as a historical interpreter at museums along the East Coast. Her notable works include the stage adaptation of “Jane Eyre,” co-written with Sally Boyett and produced by the Classic Theatre of Maryland in spring 2024, and her adaptation of “A Christmas Carol,” performed at the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company in 2022 and 2023. Additionally, Laura co-wrote a bio-drama about Clover Adams with Ty Hallmark, produced by Ally Theatre Company in 2017.

Laura’s scholarly contributions include articles published in “Brontë Studies” and “The Revere Express,” and she was honored with the LitMag 2021 Virginia Woolf Award for Short Fiction. She is a member of the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company and an Acting Troupe Member with History At Play. Laura holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College and an MFA from The Academy for Classical Acting at The George Washington University.
