Walter Pater, the prolific 19th-century man of letters who is largely remembered for a single sentence he wrote in 1877: “All art constantly aspires towards the condition of music.” because music is the only art that successfully collapses matter and form.
Artists have been inspired by music and music has been inspired by art throughout human history. PAC’s COLOR OF SOUND JURIED SHOW would like to celebrate that interplay, so show us how you’ve been inspired by music in your artwork!
Chromesthesia or sound-to-color synesthesia is a type of synesthesia in which sound involuntarily evokes an experience of color, shape, and movement. Those with Chromesthesia perceive color when hearing music notes or songs. Individuals with Chromesthesia are literally able to paint or color-code the music and sounds they hear.
All works must be inspired by music, created by listening to music, incorporating music in some way, have music as the subject matter, or be created by individuals with chromesthesia. We want to experience sounds through your 2D and 3D works and explore the interplay between artmaking and music.
For our COLOR OF SOUND JURIED SHOW we will be accepting digital entries only. All mediums welcome, all works must be wired to hang, max 60” and 100 lbs. Max two pieces per artist. All works must be for sale. Entering the show does not guarantee placement. Juror decisions going out via email by 9/16/24.

*All entry fees will go toward the gallery opening and operations costs to support PAC’s programming.
*PAC takes a 30% commission on any artwork sold during the show with payment going to the artist via paypal or check at the end of the show.
*PAC does not take a commision off any artwork on the gallery sitters wall. If interested in sitting for the show, our gallery hours are Saturdays 1-4 and Sunday 10-4. We are booking sitters for our fall show. Email Deborah dmsantos@comcast.net

ABOUT THE JUROR
William Schaff has been a working artist for over two decades.
Known primarily for his mastery at album artwork, (Okkervil River, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Songs: Ohia, etc.) Schaff is also the founder of Warren Rhode Island’s “Fort Foreclosure”.
The building, lovingly named without the least bit of irony, serves as Schaff’s home and studio as well as home and meeting place for other artists (most notably former resident musicians MorganEve Swain, and the Late David Lamb, both of Brown Bird).
William also performed for a decade with the What Cheer? Brigade, as one of 20 musicians in a brass band that traveled the U.S. and Europe. An experience that shaped so much of his life.
In 2015, recognizing the importance of art in this world, he expanded his community to the West Coast, where he started “The Outpost”, in Oakland, California. There — financial earnings be damned! — William filled his days creating works of art for private commissions, bands, exhibitions and his own examinations of human interaction.
He has since returned to Rhode Island and can be found, daily, doing the same at the Fort.
