BRIDGEWATER STATE – FOOTBALL

Coach Verria’s Latest Blog

Hello BSU Bear Alumni,

Hope everyone is doing well. It was great to see many of you at Coach Mazz’s dedication, truly an excellent turnout for a wonderful event. After a slow start, we have put together 2 big wins for a 2-0 Conference record. We started the season with a tough loss to a very good MIT team, and then an even tougher 24-21 loss to WPI in the closing seconds. While those were 2 tough games and 2 tough losses, the biggest impact was the players that got injured in those games.

We had season ending injuries to our starting DE at MIT and we lost an OL, and 2 starting linebackers the following week, all out for the year. But as you all know, injuries are part of the game and the kids that have filled in have done a great job. After a big win at home vs Plymouth State 41-19 and a thrilling 35-28 win over Western CT last night, we are ready for the rest of the season. Some of the highlights for the season so far include:

  • Our QB James Cahoon will soon break all our QB records
  • Adam Couch, who has been running behind a great OL
  • Isaiah Wright, who ran back two kickoffs for TD’s

Defensively, Brendan Albert is leading the team in tackles, and a close 2nd is Kodi Saotome. The other good thing is that our kicking game has been as solid as ever, with Shane Drake doing punts and kickoffs and Joey Naso handling extra points and short field goals. This week we go on the road to Fitchburg and then on to Worcester the following Friday night, both Conference games. The following game will be Homecoming vs Westfield on October 21st and then defending champion UMass Dartmouth for Senior Day.

We look forward to seeing everyone at Homecoming and appreciate all of your support. Coach Verria
