DOES YOUR WEBSITE NEED A TUNE-UP?

How websites are like cars. Sort of. PR WORKS

A discussion with a website designer friend led to this analogy. It stemmed from an observation that a website may not need a redesign but a copy update. That led yours truly to the car comparison.

How so?

Well, with a car you only really see the outside of it when you get it in it. While you’re on the road, you really only see the interior. So, how your car looks on the outside can almost be irrelevant. That’s presuming the interior is reasonably clean. If not, a little elbow grease or having it detailed can do the trick.

In other words, you tidy up and enhance the copy. Maybe change the images and you can avoid an overhaul of the website.

If the car starts acting up—engine trouble, tires, etc.—you bring it in to the mechanics and have them take a look. They can then make an assessment for a fix. That’s when the designer tweaks and changes some things or perhaps adds some backroom functions.

There comes a time when the mechanic and the designer can’t tweak any more. It requires an overhaul. In short, it’s time to buy a new car or completely redesign the website.

If you’re still with me on this analogy, here’s one more thought to ponder. No matter what model car you drive, you can always keep it clean. And no matter what the state of the design of your website, you can always improve the copy. If you’re looking to clean up your copy—whether your site needs an overhaul or not—give us a call. We’ll get your website engine—and the search engines—humming.
