TIVERTON FOUR CORNERS: THE TRADITIONS CONTINUE

TIVERTON FOUR CORNERS

New Bedford Sea Chantey Chorus

& The Spindle Rock River Rats

July 8th at 4:00 PM

The New Bedford Sea Chantey Chorus has launched its 22nd season with a boatload of musical treasures that they happily share whenever they make landfall.

The 35-member chorus began in 2001 as a group of Schooner Ernestina volunteers gathered to sing and enjoy the music of our local maritime heritage. What followed might be called a voyage of exploration leading to many historical and musical connections.

Collected from a variety of domestic ports of call as well as coastal cultures from across the oceans, their repertoire holds the echoes of Yankee whalemen, fisherfolk and the global merchant fleet.

In addition, historic songs from foreign shores are offered with a complement of contemporary songs from far-flung sources that reflect our great maritime heritage.

This year’s program holds a particular tribute to Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey for her return to her Massachusetts coastal water in New Bedford and Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

We also will be singing of New England’s musical and poetic ties to Old England with a selection of tunes first heard in the 17th and 18th centuries, to include Sir Thomas Ravenscroft’s “We Be Three Poor Mariners,” Vaughn-Williams’ arrangement of the traditional “Down Among the Dead Men” and an 18th century drinking song, “The Roast Beef of Old England.”

This set of tunes will be sung in concert with recorders, violin, bass , accordion, concertina and various percussion played by instrumentalists from the ranks of the Chorus.

The Spindle Rock River Rats will also be performing their eclectic toe tapping tunes.

This is a summer event that is not to be missed.
