RHODE ISLAND SENATE LEADERSHIP PAC

Doubling Down On Access And Transparency

Friend,

Our historic State House is a unique, beautiful building that draws visitors from around the world. But it was constructed at the dawn of the 20th century, around the time radio was invented, and its age presents some limitations – especially in the digital age.

In the coming days, the Senate will celebrate the completion of a project that further modernizes the people’s house and makes our chamber’s work more accessible than ever. The number of Senate hearing rooms set up for broadcasting and live streaming is being doubled, from two to four, meaning video of all our committees will soon be available to the public.

Already, all Senate and House floor sessions are televised, live streamed and archived for on demand viewing via Capitol TV. But until now, only Senate committee hearings held in Room 313 and the Senate Lounge could be streamed and televised.

Going forward, hearings held in Room 211 and Room 212, known as the Senator Roger R. Badeau Hearing Room, can be broadcast and streamed as well. The renovations have maintained the historic character of the hearing rooms while outfitting them with modern, wall-mounted, robotic cameras.

For Rhode Islanders seeking to take part in their government, getting to Smith Hill to watch or testify at various hearings can be a challenge. This project is the latest in a series of steps Senate leadership has taken to increase transparency and help the public to stay informed.

We want to thank the Joint Committee on Legislative Services, Capitol TV, and many others for making this important project possible. We remain committed to ensuring all Rhode Islanders can observe and participate in their government.

Sincerely,

The RI Senate Leadership Team
