Below is a statement from Senate Minority Leader Jessica de la Cruz on behalf of the Senate Minority Caucus:
“The loss of our esteemed colleague, Maryellen Goodwin, has left us with a profound sense of sadness. Maryellen was not just a lawmaker but a strong leader and woman of deep faith.
Her guiding hand, immense knowledge, and beautiful smile will be sorely missed in the Senate, and our heartfelt sympathies go out to her family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside her.
Maryellen was a remarkable woman whose legacy is truly legendary.
Her numerous accomplishments and major contributions to Rhode Island’s legislative landscape have and will continue to benefit generations to come.
She will always be remembered as a true champion of our state, whose impact was larger than life.
However, more than her impressive career accomplishments, Maryellen will be remembered for how she made us all feel. Her presence was a comfort, her courage, and good humor in the face of her illness an inspiration, and her never-faltering smile a ray of sunshine in our lives.
Indeed, she was one of a kind, and her loss is deeply felt by
all who knew her.
Rest in peace, Maryellen, our cherished friend, and colleague. You will be greatly missed.”
