“Portuguese is my first non-native language, and I will continue to work on my language skills as a mean to be able to relate to as many people as possible. I think of my parents and family abroad, for them English was and is a key to opportunities, but opportunities are not exclusive to English, that is why I am excited for the opportunities Portuguese will bring.
Ardhélia Oliveira (Senior)
Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages – Portuguese Concentration.
Minor in Educational Studies
“My goal is to become a middle school world languages teacher. I hope to teach Portuguese and Spanish. The courses I have taken at Rhode Island College have helped me expand my consciousness of Lusophone cultures beyond my native Brazil. This is important because it will help me teach my students about the similarities and diversity found within the Lusophone world.”
Sydney Hajder (Junior)
Bachelor of Science in Radiography.
Minor in Portuguese.
“Over the past month [in Clinical Education I], I have encountered many patients who don’t speak English. In some cases, the exams are very embarrassing to the patient, or they must be done fast and efficiently. Being a student, I am unfortunately unable to act as the translator. However, once I am the technologist, my second language will be useful as I will be able to speak directly to the patient. My hope is to put the patient at ease since I will be able to communicate with them.”
The Lema-Fernandes Study Abroad Scholarship
$5,000 scholarship
John Mercedes (Senior)
Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems.
Minor in Data Analytics. Minor in Portuguese.
Project: 2023 CIEE Lisbon Global Internship Summer program in Portugal. 8 Weeks
“I plan to intern at a small company to work both on skills related to my major (Computer Information Systems) and minors (Portuguese and Data Analytics). I see this project as training for my future in trans-cultural communication. The internship will be training my professional skills but incorporate the language skills in a formal setting. The immersion from living in Portugal will challenge me; building greater fluency and expanding my knowledge of details of the Portuguese culture. In unison I hope that these will provide the necessary experience to start initiating my own trans-cultural community projects.”
