BRIDGEWATER STATE UNIVERSITY

BSU Community Mourns Loss Of A Fellow Bear.

DAVID P. DEEP, VICE PRESIDENT EMERITUS

Dear Friends,

It is with great regret that I write to inform you of the passing of David P. Deep, vice-president emeritus of student services at Bridgewater State University, at the age of 88 on February 2, 2023, after a brief illness in Barre, Vermont. Dave and his wife Judy, who was BSU’s long-time head nurse, were married for 66 years and retired together from the university in 1989 and moved from Bridgewater to Barre, their original home and where they had met as students at Spaulding High School.

Dave and Judy married in September 1956, while he was serving as a commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps, based at Camp Pendleton in California.

He started his professional career as a physical education teacher at the Indian Reservation in Fort Covington, New York, and moved in 1962 to Springfield College to earn his master’s degree and where he was also a member of the school’s football coaching staff.

A year later, in 1963, he was recruited to Bridgewater State College as a member of the faculty in the Department of Men’s Physical Education.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he also served as an assistant football coach and head basketball coach.

He was appointed Acting Dean of Men in 1966 and made permanent Dean of Men in 1967.

In 1977 he was appointed Dean of Students and then became the first Vice President for Student Services, the position he held until he retired in 1989.

Generations of alumni, faculty, and staff recall Dave Deep as an extraordinary person, deeply committed to the highest standards of personal and professional achievement.

The 26 years he devoted to Bridgewater as a member of the faculty, as a coach, and as a senior administrator were marked by his unwavering commitment to the institution’s motto, Not to be Ministered unto but to Minister.

David Deep impacted the lives of so many of us who call Bridgewater home. He will be greatly missed.

To Judy, his children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchild the Bridgewater family extends our collective sorrow at the news of his passing, but we will always be grateful that it was here that he shared his profound talents and abilities for more than a quarter of a century.

If you care to send a message to the Deep family, please visit the memorial guestbook at

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Judy and David Deep Endowed Scholarship Fund at Bridgewater State University.

The fund will continue serving BSU students for generations to come and encourage us to emulate and advance the principles which defined his life and his career and made him such a much-loved and respected member of our community.
