THE DOUGLAS LEGACY
Two Bristol organizations, Linden Place Mansion and Rogers Free Library, have teamed up to present a series of programs highlighting the life and legacy of Frederick Douglass and the relevance and resonance of his life and words, especially today.
The series begins on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at 6 pm at the Rogers Free Library where a local professor of history will lead a book club discussion on “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American
Slave.”
Although Douglass became a powerful force for the American Anti-Slavery Society in the 1840s, many people doubted his story of enslavement – because of his eloquence. They thought it unlikely that a man who had just escaped slavery could be such a skillful speaker. Douglass wrote his autobiography in order to convince his critics of his genuineness.
