Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England Troops Give Back During the Holiday Season
WARWICK, RI (December 21, 2022) — Throughout the month of December troops from Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England adopted families, donated personal hygiene and non-perishable food items, made blankets, and more for those who need it most during the holiday season.
Troop 723 from Barrington, RI, adopted a family from Children’s Friend. Each Girl Scout in the troop bought items from the family’s wish list. Items included diapers, clothes, books, winter jackets, cold weather accessories, baby wipes, toys, and gift cards. There are 10 Girl Scouts in the troop, and all of them were able to participate and cross items off the family’s holiday wish list.
During the month of November, Girl Scouts from the Providence, RI area collected personal care and non-perishable food items for Operation Stand Down Rhode Island’s food pantry.
Troops from Providence were encouraged to get creative in asking for donations—one troop made a collection box for a local church they hold their troop meetings in, other troops asked Girl Scouts to bring in donations to one of their troop meetings, some Girl Scouts asked family and friends to donate items when they came by for Thanksgiving dinner.
Troop 178 collected so many items they dropped them off themselves, and the rest of the donations were delivered by Troop 214.
The Girl Scouts helped unload the donations into the food pantry and met with staff where they discussed volunteer opportunities and the potential for another collection in the spring.
Troop 977 from Wrentham, MA volunteered with the Greater Attleboro Area Council for Children for their Christmas is for Kids program!
The troop made tie blankets and collected toys to donate to the children. They also gave wrapping paper so the families can wrap the gifts for the children. The Girl Scouts loved making something personal for kids their own age!
Troop 321 from Millville, MA used some of their earnings from the Girl Scout Cookie Program to adopt a family this year. They went shopping and purchased art supplies, an easy bake oven, a jewelry making kit, slime, clothes, and more!
At one of their troop meetings the Girl Scouts wrapped and labeled all the gifts and dropped off the gifts. Troop 321 also volunteered their time at distribution week, helping the shelter distribute gifts to the families.
Girl Scouts from other troops and service units throughout GSSNE also gave back this holiday season, and throughout the year. As they have for over 100 years, Girl Scouts and volunteers continue to reach out to better the world for others, one community at a time, and one project at a time.
