Language access in healthcare is a right recognized in law and employers are required to provide interpreter services by qualified interpreters and translators.

 

The new Certificate in Continuing Studies in Portuguese/English Medical Interpreter Training aims to fulfill a growing need for qualified Portuguese/English medical interpreters in Rhode Island and in the region.

Description:

 

The medical interpreter program is built on the National Standards for Healthcare Interpreter Training created by the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare. 

 

This course provides training for bilingual individuals to develop knowledge, skills and training necessary for effective language interpretation in health care settings. The three types of interpretation will be instructed and practiced: consecutive interpretation, simultaneous interpretation and sight translation.

 

At the end of this course students will sit for national certification from the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI); and take the ALTA Medical Interpretation Assessment in Portuguese/English.

 

Eligibility requirements:

 

Advanced fluency in Portuguese and English; Oral Interview.

 

Tuition: $500.00 (includes all books needed for the program and all fees to sit for the national certification examination and the ALTA language assessment.)
